The National Gwangju Science Museum is launching a training program to develop specialists who will lead AI education in the region, the museum announced.
Dubbed "AI Sherpas" — a reference to the mountain guides who lead climbers along difficult routes — the trainees will help citizens learn and use generative AI safely and accessibly. The museum plans to expand the regional AI education infrastructure by cultivating instructors with strong generative AI skills, ultimately raising citizens' AI literacy and digital competency.
The program runs in three tiers: basic (Basic Sherpa), intermediate (Pro Sherpa) and advanced (Master Sherpa). Through hands-on, stage-by-stage instruction covering foundational generative AI use, AI education content creation, digital teaching-tool development and practice lectures, the museum aims to train 100 AI education specialists in total.
The basic course, open to 70 adults with an interest in AI education, runs Aug. 26 to 27. The intermediate and advanced courses will follow sequentially and are open to graduates of the preceding tiers as well as those with AI-related academic backgrounds or professional experience.
All courses are free of charge, and graduates of each tier will receive a certificate issued in the name of the museum director. Advanced course graduates will be registered as National Gwangju Science Museum-certified AI Sherpas and will receive support to participate in activities such as AI education instruction and mentoring.
Song Mi-geum, a senior researcher in the science education division who designed the program, said AI Sherpas would serve as guides for regional AI education, helping citizens use generative AI more easily and correctly. "We will continue to develop the specialists who will lead local AI education by linking stage-by-stage training with hands-on field activities," she said.
Meanwhile, the National Gwangju Science Museum plans to expand its role as an AI innovation hub for the Jeolla and Jeju regions by running the AI Sherpa program alongside life-stage AI education programs, an open AI experience space called "AI Lounge for All," and specialized AI consulting services aimed at addressing local AI challenges.
