Asia's largest indie game festival opens Friday at BEXCO in Busan.

The Busan city government announced Thursday that it will co-host BIC Festival 2026 with the Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency and the BIC Festival Organizing Committee at BEXCO from Friday through Sunday.

First held in 2015, the Busan Indie Connect Festival is Asia's largest indie game event, bringing together domestic and international indie titles under one roof. Indie games are low-budget, experimental titles developed independently of major capital backing.

This year's slogan is "Buff Your Indie Spirit," capturing the idea of visitors and developers connecting, discovering new work and growing stronger through the indie spirit together.

A total of 856 indie games from 57 countries were submitted for this year's festival — a 44 percent increase from the previous year — and 332 works from 42 countries, selected through category-by-category judging, will be exhibited on site. The competitive General and Rookie categories were judged by a panel of 22 jurors over three months, while the non-competitive Connect Pick category was chosen by votes from BIC Connectors with expertise in indie games, reflecting the perspective of players and general visitors in the exhibition lineup.

The in-person exhibition and experience events run Friday through Sunday, divided into a Business Day and Festival Day format to balance industry engagement with public appeal. On opening day Friday, the program will feature industry networking through "Biz Matching" sessions and the Busan Indie Wave Conference, where participants can share and discuss trends in the game industry. The weekend days — Saturday and Sunday — serve as Festival Days, offering indie game exhibitions and hands-on experience programs for general visitors.

The official awards program, the BIC Awards, will announce nominees in major categories at 5 p.m. Friday at the close of the Busan Indie Wave Conference. Final winners, selected based on on-site voting results, will be presented at the closing ceremony Sunday.

This year the festival will also expand indie game intellectual property through a partnership with YouTube Playables, pushing to broaden the indie ecosystem's reach. YouTube Playables is a service that lets users play games instantly with a single click, without downloading or installing a separate app. The festival organizing committee will pilot seven indie games from five vetted companies, aiming to improve accessibility for users worldwide.
