Gochang Bukgo High School, led by Principal Im Dong-gyun, reaffirmed its standing as a hub of global education and a top university-placement school during an official visit by a delegation from China's Jilin Province education authority and the Chinese Consulate General in Gwangju.
Selected through a North Jeolla Province Office of Education open competition, the school has operated as an international exchange school for four years and is a UNESCO-affiliated school that also runs a Confucius Institute, offering a differentiated global curriculum designed to build students' competencies. Beyond language instruction, the school runs a world-citizenship education program aligned with UNESCO's values and facilitates in-depth cultural exchange through its Confucius Institute.
Students' critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills have been recognized as core competencies increasingly demanded by university admissions, translating into strong placement outcomes.
On Tuesday, Jilin Province Vice Education Commissioner Yu Qingchuan and other senior education officials joined Chinese Consul General in Gwangju Gu Jingqi and members of the diplomatic mission for a visit to the school, where they observed its innovative education system firsthand. The delegation toured key facilities, including the international wing, and sat in on live classroom sessions, expressing strong confidence in the well-grounded learning environment Gochang Bukgo has built.
A roundtable discussion followed, during which a video showcasing the school's educational vision and international exchange activities was screened. Particularly well received were clips of students competing in a Chinese-language speaking contest they had organized themselves, as well as a video cheering on Chinese students sitting the gaokao — China's national college entrance exam — which drew a warm response from the visiting educators.
"Our school operates as an international exchange school and a UNESCO school under a four-year North Jeolla Province Office of Education program, and we educate students to develop a broad, global perspective," Principal Im said. "We will spare no effort in providing differentiated educational support so that the talented students who have grown in this cradle of global education can achieve even greater results in university admissions and their future careers."
