'Odyssey' eyes 7 million mark in third weekend of box office dominance

Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey" looks set to extend its box office dominance into a third consecutive weekend.

The film drew about 188,000 viewers on Thursday, capturing a 63.2 percent share of ticket revenue, to hold firm at No. 1 on the domestic box office chart.

Since opening on Aug. 5, "Odyssey" has accumulated roughly 6.788 million admissions, putting the 7 million milestone within reach.

Based on Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey," the film follows Trojan War hero Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he endures a series of ordeals on his journey home to Ithaca.

The production has drawn widespread global acclaim for being the first film in cinema history to shoot every scene with IMAX cameras, and for its grounded, effects-restrained approach to mythological material — keeping computer-generated imagery to a minimum.

When advance ticket sales for "Odyssey's" fourth week opened on Thursday, a surge of users caused temporary access delays on the CGV app.

Momentum is also building for "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," the fourth installment in the Spider-Man franchise.

The film drew about 55,000 viewers on Thursday, accounting for a 16.9 percent revenue share, bringing its cumulative audience to roughly 7.74 million. It could surpass 8 million admissions over the weekend.

Third place went to "Insidious: Out of the Further," a horror film that opened Thursday. It drew about 22,000 viewers on its opening day, taking a 6.4 percent revenue share.

The theatrical anime "Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway" ranked fourth with about 9,000 viewers and a 2.9 percent share.

As of 9 a.m. Friday, "Odyssey" led advance ticket sales with a commanding 72.5 percent booking rate, with roughly 753,000 seats already reserved.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" ranked second in advance sales at 11.4 percent, with about 117,000 tickets booked.

"Gyeongjugibang," a road film starring Lee Jung-eun, Gong Hyo-jin, Park So-dam and Lee Yeon set to open Wednesday, ranked third with a 2.4 percent booking rate and about 25,000 tickets sold. "Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway" was fourth at 1.9 percent, with roughly 19,000 advance tickets.
