Promising health functional food technologies developed by government-funded research institutes are being directly connected to industry, accelerating their path to commercialization.

The National Research Council of Science and Technology's joint commercialization task force said Tuesday it held a technology briefing and consultation session in conjunction with Hi KOREA 2026, a global exhibition of health functional ingredients and products, at COEX in Seoul.

The event was designed to present technologies with strong commercialization potential in the health functional food sector to industry players and to connect pre-identified companies with researchers for follow-up collaboration, including technology transfers and joint research. One-on-one partnering sessions between researchers and prospective corporate partners were also held on site.

Four promising technologies were presented: a sleep-improvement health functional food using beach silvertop extract, developed by Eom Min-young of the Korea Food Research Institute; a health functional food and formulation technology for improving sleep quality using solid-state fermented Schisandra berry pomace extract, developed by Jeong Yu-jin of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology; a respiratory health improvement technology based on black ginseng extract, developed by Lee Su-eui of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology; and a technology for preventing and treating circulatory health conditions using pepper byproduct extract, developed by Kim Kyung-ho of the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine.

The task force has been identifying technologies with strong market potential and corporate demand from among those held by member institutes and cataloguing them as promising technology assets. Since its launch in 2024, it has run 39 small-group focused technology consultations, identifying 268 innovation-leading companies and 140 promising technologies. Those efforts have resulted in seven technology transfers and two joint research agreements.

The task force operates a full-cycle commercialization system that goes beyond briefings and technology transfers, offering support for patent consulting, strategic IP research and development, technology valuation and business model design.

At the product development stage, it plans to provide regulatory compliance reviews, productization support and specialist consulting. After technology transfers, it will link researchers and companies to joint research, follow-on commercialization and commissioned project planning as part of a scale-up fast track.

NST Chairman Kim Young-sik said the task force serves as "a shared platform that jointly validates and connects promising technologies from multiple research institutes with industry demand," adding that the council would expand its support "so that proven technology assets can translate into real commercialization outcomes, beyond technology transfers and joint research."
