Charges: violation of Road Traffic Act (drunk driving)
Summary order of 10 million won fine confirmed
A police official who drove drunk and struck eight parked vehicles and motorcycles in a narrow alley has received a final summary order imposing a fine.
According to legal sources Thursday, the Cheongju District Court issued a summary order fining Inspector A, an officer with the North Chungcheong Province Police Agency, 10 million won ($7,220) on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act through drunk driving.
A summary order is a simplified judicial procedure used in relatively minor cases, decided on documents alone without a full trial. Rather than going through formal court proceedings, it imposes a financial penalty such as a fine.
At around 7:30 a.m. on March 11, A drove a passenger car through an alley in Yongam-dong, Cheongju, with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.124 percent — well above the 0.08 percent threshold for license revocation. He is accused of striking seven parked vehicles and one motorcycle in succession.
Prosecutors referred the case through summary proceedings rather than a formal indictment, and the court likewise issued a summary order imposing the 10 million won fine. A had the right to contest the order and request a full trial but chose not to do so, leaving the fine confirmed as issued.
