Geumcheon-gu hosted a special lecture on college admission strategies tailored to mid-tier students Tuesday at the Geumcheon Career and College Guidance Center, targeting first- and second-year high school students and their parents.
The session was the third installment in the center's relay lecture series, designed to help mid-tier students prepare for university admissions under the new five-tier internal grading system. It was organized based on satisfaction survey results from the second lecture in July, incorporating feedback from parents.
Park Moon-su, head of materials development at the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education's university admissions guidance support team, was invited to present, walking attendees through commonly overlooked admissions factors and preparation strategies by application type, illustrated with concrete examples.
The lecture covered three areas: understanding the grade compression phenomenon and where mid-tier students stand within it; strategies for strengthening differentiation and a roadmap for improving grades; and criteria for selecting universities. It provided practical information for mid-tier students navigating academics and admissions preparation.
Interest from parents was high from the moment registration opened. The 60-seat capacity filled on Aug. 12, nearly two weeks before the original registration deadline of Aug. 24, and final registrations reached 77. On the day of the lecture, 55 people attended.
Even after the lecture ended, individual questions continued on topics including application strategies by grade level and how to balance early and regular admissions. Parents took the opportunity to examine college admission directions suited to their children's circumstances.
Geumcheon-gu District Mayor Choi Ki-chan said it was meaningful to see such strong interest in a lecture shaped by parents' own voices, and pledged to keep listening closely to feedback from the field and to continue running college guidance programs suited to the evolving admissions environment.
Geumcheon-gu is running a total of six relay college guidance lectures this year. The fourth session, on interview strategies for the 2027 early admissions cycle, is scheduled for Sept. 9. Registration is available through the Geumcheon Career and College Guidance Center website.
