Park Hong-keun says cabinet reshuffle brought in proven talent

Minister of Planning and Budget Park Hong-keun said Monday that the cabinet reshuffle carried out by President Lee Jae Myung on Sunday brought in people whose skills and competence had already been proven.

Speaking on YTN Radio's "Lee Dong-hyung's News Head-On" that day, Park said the reshuffle was intended to "create an opportunity to lead national growth and economic stability more vigorously." He added that bureaucrats with verified ability had been brought in, along with politicians who, though young, were recognized for their expertise.

Park also said public concern over real estate and share-related issues had been considerable, and suggested the reshuffle was meant to use the moment as a fresh turning point to address them.

He noted that figures from progressive parties had also been appointed, saying he believed the move reflected a desire to reaffirm the administration's commitment to reform — describing it as "a government built by candlelight vigils, made possible by the support of the people."

Responding to opposition calls for the dismissal of Cheong Wa Dae policy chief Kim Yong-beom, Park pushed back. He said the administration was "just over a year old — about one year and two months" and that the policy chief could not be held responsible for every policy decision.

"The president can replace his Cheong Wa Dae aides or cabinet ministers at any time as needed, but there is always a right moment," Park said. "Now that new cabinet members have come in, there needs to be time for them to get in sync with Cheong Wa Dae."
