N. Korea crosses MDL on eastern, western fronts over weekend; military fires warning shots

North Korean troops crossed the Military Demarcation Line simultaneously on the eastern and western fronts last weekend, prompting South Korean forces to respond with warning broadcasts and warning shots and to raise their alert level, it has been confirmed.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday that "North Korean troops recently violated the MDL, and our military fired warning shots in accordance with operational procedures," adding that "the military is closely monitoring North Korean movements and maintaining a firm military readiness posture."

MDL crossings, which occurred frequently last year, appear to be resuming in earnest as North Korea presses ahead with its border fortification work.

Since North Korean leader Kim Jong-un declared in December 2023 that inter-Korean relations constitute a relationship between "two hostile states," Pyongyang has been carrying out what it calls border fortification — clearing vegetation, leveling terrain, laying mines, and installing fences and tactical roads along the MDL.

In the course of that work, North Korean troops have repeatedly approached or crossed the MDL, resulting in 17 violations last year alone. The Ministry of National Defense estimates the fortification work will be completed around 2028 at the current pace.

This year, incursions had largely ceased as vegetation-clearing work near the MDL wound down, but the situation has changed of late. In mid-August, North Korean troops crossed the MDL on the eastern front for the first time this year, drawing warning shots from South Korean forces, and several more crossings on the eastern front followed.

This time, North Korean troops moved south across the MDL on the western front as well, suggesting the pattern is spreading across the entire line of contact.

Within and around the military, concern is growing that as North Korea's fence and tactical road construction advances closer to the MDL, patrol and guard troops will push further south — raising the likelihood of close-range encounters between North and South Korean forces.
