Mungyeong city council unanimously demands full review of 345kV transmission line project

The Mungyeong City Council in North Gyeongsang Province unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the 345kV Sinyeongju-Sinjoongbu transmission line construction project at the first plenary session of its 294th regular session on Tuesday.

Deputy Council Speaker Nam Ki-ho sponsored the resolution.

The measure was prompted by concerns that a large-scale national infrastructure project — roughly 44.1 kilometers of the approximately 109-kilometer line are set to pass through Mungyeong — is being pushed forward without adequate public consultation, despite its long-term impact on residents' property rights and living environment.

The council particularly took issue with the timing of public briefings for Mungyeong residents, which were held from June 23 through early July — after the ninth site-selection committee meeting on June 9 had already finalized the route.

In response, the council called on Korea Electric Power Corporation and relevant government agencies to conduct a full review of the project from scratch and to establish a democratic and fair public consultation process with meaningful resident participation, with the aim of minimizing harm to citizens' property rights and living environment.

"The burden cannot be unilaterally imposed on local residents simply in the name of expanding the national power grid," Council Speaker Seo Jeong-sik said. "The Mungyeong City Council will actively respond to ensure that the views of Mungyeong and its residents are genuinely reflected."
