Residents swap discarded materials to advance carbon neutrality, laying groundwork for sustainable social solidarity economy
South Chungcheong Province held a resource-recycling volunteer campaign in Boryeong on Wednesday, partnering with the provincial volunteer center and the Boryeong City volunteer center to promote carbon neutrality through the exchange of discarded materials.
About 250 members of volunteer organizations took part in the event, held as part of the "Wave of 10 Volunteer Relays" initiative. The campaign aimed to put the social value of carbon neutrality into practice and build a foundation for a sustainable social solidarity economy in South Chungcheong Province through the circulation of waste resources.
Participants exchanged recyclable materials from daily life — including used batteries, milk cartons and plastic bottles — and reflected on the importance of carbon neutrality and climate protection.
The event also strengthened local community networks through interaction among participants, who shared in the spirit of collective solidarity.
In addition, a healing academy was held for volunteers to boost their pride in service and reaffirm the value of everyday sharing and participation.
The province plans to continue supporting related activities so that residents can directly engage in solving community problems through volunteerism and help drive community recovery and sustainable local development.
"Volunteering is about creating change in the community and building a better society," said Lee Jong-pil, director of the province's Social Solidarity Economy Bureau. "We will actively support volunteer activities so that government and residents can work together to respond to the climate crisis and build a sustainable community going forward."
