Council members and staff donate 10,000 briquettes in Dong-gu
Busan City Council Speaker Kang Mu-gil pledges to keep citizens' lives at the center of legislation
The Busan City Council on Thursday afternoon launched its 2026 "Love Energy Briquette Sharing" volunteer campaign in the Maechukji area of Dong-gu, aimed at helping energy-vulnerable residents stay warm through the winter.
All council members and administrative staff pooled funds to donate 10,000 coal briquettes, which Speaker Kang Mu-gil and other participants personally carried by A-frame to homes in the Maechukji neighborhood. The council was the first public institution in the Busan area this year to hold a briquette-sharing drive, lending support to low-income households as the heating season approaches.
"Being the first institution in Busan to step up for this volunteer effort reflects our commitment to keeping citizens' lives at the heart of what we do in the council chamber and to paying close attention to the difficulties of everyday life," Kang said. "I hope the care put into every single briquette becomes a source of warmth for our neighbors. The Busan City Council will continue to stand with citizens on the ground where it matters most."
The Busan City Council marked its 100th day since opening on Tuesday, operating under the banner "Only citizen happiness! Only Busan's development!" The council has been working to build a foundation of communication and cooperation in what is the first opposition-majority configuration in its history, launching special committees ahead of schedule and pressing ahead with legislation to ease the burden on residents.
