New ad reimagines 1980s campaign for returning Yangju brand
Lotte Chilsung Beverage announced Friday that it has cast comedian Lee Seon-min as the advertising model for Captain Q, a Yangju brand being relaunched 11 years after it was discontinued.
The company plans to draw on Lee's ability to portray a wide range of distinctive characters to convey the brand's personality in an entertaining way.
The first commercial featuring Lee is built around the concept of "the legend's return" and pays homage to the original Captain Q ads from the 1980s. The strategy is to reinterpret the classic campaign with a contemporary sensibility, connecting the brand to a new consumer experience.
Captain Q helped popularize Yangju in South Korea during the 1980s and 1990s. The relaunched version uses 99 percent authentic Caribbean rum to deliver a sweet, smooth taste.
"We planned this campaign to introduce the brand to more consumers as we bring Captain Q back," a Lotte Chilsung Beverage official said. "We hope to deliver both the familiar warmth of the original ads and a fresh sense of fun through a modern reinterpretation with Lee Seon-min."
