Gunwi-gun in North Gyeongsang Province will host the 2026 Gunwi County Governor's Cup Sports Festival at the Gunwi General Tennis Court and other sport-specific venues through Dec. 5, the county announced Monday.
The festival was organized to promote physical fitness and athletic performance among residents, encourage participation in recreational sports and raise the profile of sports in Gunwi-gun.
About 2,500 recreational athletes are taking part across 13 disciplines — park golf, tennis, soccer, gateball, table tennis, soft tennis, baduk, bowling, baseball, golf, futsal, mountain climbing and badminton.
An opening ceremony was held Saturday morning at the Gunwi Indoor Tennis Court, with about 250 participants and guests in attendance.
Competition began Friday with park golf, followed by tennis, soccer, gateball, table tennis and soft tennis on Saturday, and baduk and bowling on Sunday.
Baseball is scheduled for Friday, golf on Nov. 2, and futsal and mountain climbing on Nov. 7, with badminton closing out the festival on Dec. 5.
"Recreational sports are essential for residents to lead healthy, vibrant lives," Gunwi County Governor Kim Jin-yeol said. "We will continue to provide unwavering attention and support so that a wide range of recreational sports can flourish."
