Samsung Lions defeat KT Wiz to reclaim Korean Series crown; fans say 'it couldn't get any better than this'
The Samsung Lions have finally returned to the top. After 12 long years, the team lifted the Korean Series trophy Sunday, turning Daegu into a sea of blue.
Samsung routed the KT Wiz 12-1 in Game 5 of the 2026 Shinhan SOL KBO Korean Series at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu on Sunday afternoon, clinching the series four games to one for the franchise's first Korean Series title since 2014.
The victory carries added significance as the first Korean Series championship won at Samsung Lions Park, which opened in 2016.
The moment the title was sealed, the ballpark erupted into celebration. Fans packed into the stadium embraced one another and roared with joy as Samsung's team anthem and victory chants echoed inside and outside the venue.
The reaction across Daegu was equally fervent. Fans who had cheered for Samsung for decades wept with emotion, while families and younger supporters shared in the jubilation.
Citizens watching the broadcast at Dongseongno restaurants and homes across the city savored the winning moment together.
Longtime Samsung fans were united in their feelings. "It couldn't get any better than this — we have no idea how long we've waited since 2014," they said. "The players never gave up and kept fighting to the end, and that's what gave us this incredible moment."
One resident said the win came at a meaningful time. "Daegu's economy has been struggling in many ways lately, and I hope Samsung's championship brings great comfort and hope to the people of this city," the resident said. "I'm looking forward to this title marking the start of a new Samsung dynasty."
The city government joined in the celebration. Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho visited Samsung Lions Park on Sunday to cheer on the players and congratulate the team.
"I sincerely congratulate Samsung on winning the championship for the first time in 12 years," Choo said. "I am confident this victory will give our citizens renewed energy and serve as a catalyst for Daegu's further growth and development."
