Fire at Hyundai Mobis India factory raises production concerns for Hyundai Motor

A fire at Hyundai Mobis's parts factory in India has raised concerns about potential production disruptions at Hyundai Motor Co's Indian subsidiary. The affected facility, located near Hyundai Motor's main India production hub, is a key supplier of infotainment systems and electronics components.

The fire broke out May 31 at the Hyundai Mobis factory in the Irungattukottai-Sriperumbudur industrial belt near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, according to industry sources and local reports. It started at around 3:30 p.m. local time. Fire department crews arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm was raised and brought the blaze under control in roughly three to four hours.

A Hyundai Mobis official confirmed a fire had occurred at the factory near Chennai, adding that the complex houses multiple production facilities — including modules and battery system assembly — in separate buildings that were not directly affected. "As far as we know, those facilities had no direct impact," the official said.

However, the buildings housing electronics, chassis and safety components such as airbags sustained severe damage. "The buildings containing electronics, chassis and safety-related parts appear to have been completely destroyed," the official said, adding that the company is working to confirm the full extent of the damage and its impact on production.

Local reports said the fire started near a scrap yard or an assembly line inside the factory, but the exact origin and cause have not been officially confirmed. No casualties were reported.

The central concern is a potential disruption to parts supply. The Hyundai Mobis India factory has been supplying Hyundai Motor India with key components including audio, video and navigation systems and electronics modules — parts used across Hyundai Motor's India-manufactured vehicle lineup. Depending on the scale of the damage, the fire could affect vehicle production schedules.

Hyundai Motor India is currently assessing its parts inventory and available supply. While existing stockpiles may cover some near-term production needs, decisions on shift operations and production plans are expected once the damage and recovery timeline are more clearly established.

Hyundai Motor India's Tamil Nadu factory produces key models including the Creta, Exter, Verna and Aura, and serves as a critical hub for both domestic sales and exports. A prolonged parts shortage could place significant strain on production operations.

The Chennai area is one of India's leading automotive manufacturing clusters, home to Hyundai Motor and many of its key suppliers. Because finished-vehicle plants and parts makers operate in close proximity under a just-in-time supply model, an accident at a core supplier can trigger cascading effects on vehicle production and logistics.

Hyundai Mobis and local authorities are investigating the cause and full extent of the fire. Industry observers say the speed of production line recovery and the availability of alternative supply sources will be the key variables determining whether Hyundai Motor India faces a broader disruption.
