Expansion of AI agents powered by in-house LLM Solar
Acquisition aims to connect users, agents and industries across AI ecosystem
Upstage has acquired Timely, a generative AI multi-platform company, with plans to integrate its in-house large language model Solar into Timely's platform and accelerate its push into the AI agent market.
Upstage announced Monday that it signed the acquisition agreement at its Gangnam office, with the chief executives and key staff of both companies in attendance.
Timely operates Timely AI — formerly known as Timely GPT — an AI platform that allows users to build AI agents for workplace tasks without any coding.
Timely AI integrates a range of LLM-based functions, including prompt tools, image and video generation, and document conversion. The platform is already in use at local governments, public institutions and educational organizations across the country, including the Seoul Metropolitan Government's pay-as-you-go AI service Seoul AI Chat.
Upstage plans to lead its AI agent push with a Solar-powered version of Timely AI, aiming to make customized workflow automation accessible to anyone — not just developers.
The acquisition also fits into Upstage's broader diversification strategy. The company earlier acquired AXZ, the operator of the web portal Daum, expanding the channels through which it can distribute its AI models. With the addition of Timely, Upstage plans to accelerate its strategy of building an AI ecosystem that extends from its existing business-to-business base to public institutions, educational organizations and general consumers.
"The combination of Upstage and Timely will elevate the depth and breadth of real-world AI adoption in South Korea to a whole new level," Timely CEO Kim Dae-hwan said. "We will move quickly to lead the era of AI agents that anyone can use with ease."
Upstage CEO Kim Sung-hoon said competition in the AI industry would ultimately be decided not by model performance alone, but by how quickly and deeply models are deployed in real-world settings. "This combination will deliver AI benefits that people can actually feel, and raise the AI competitiveness of the entire nation by a notch," he said.
