PPP leader Jang congratulates Korea on World Cup win, calls for June 3 election redo

People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok congratulated South Korea's national football team on its first victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage.

Jang wrote on Facebook on Friday that he "sincerely congratulates the national football team on their first win" and would "cheer on our Taeguk Warriors with the same nationwide roar as in 2002." South Korea beat the Czech Republic 2-1 that morning.

Alongside the message, Jang posted a poster bearing the slogan "AGAIN 2002, AGAIN 6·3 Election."

The post appeared to invoke Korea's 2002 World Cup semifinal run while also calling for a rerun of the June 3 local elections. Jang has recently argued that a by-election is necessary, citing a ballot shortage during the June 3 vote.
