A compact car carrying two people in its open trunk has sparked outrage online after photos of the vehicle speeding down a road went viral.
The images were posted June 21 on the online community forum Bobaedream under the title "What on earth is this?"
The poster, identified only as A, shared photos showing two people riding in the trunk of a compact car with the trunk lid open and their legs hanging out. The vehicle's license plate was also obscured.
Article 10, Paragraph 5 of the Motor Vehicle Management Act prohibits anyone from covering or obscuring a vehicle's license plate and bars operating a vehicle in such a condition. Intentional violations carry up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won ($6,460).
Carrying passengers in a trunk while driving also constitutes a violation of safe-driving obligations under the Road Traffic Act. If an accident occurs and a trunk occupant is injured, the driver could face additional charges including negligent bodily injury.
