'Protests outside the Assembly won't get public attention'

People Power Party lawmaker Kim So-hee said Thursday that her party should consider having all its members resign their seats in response to the Democratic Party of Korea seizing control of 11 National Assembly standing committees, deepening the standoff between the two parties.
Speaking on BBS Radio's "Jeong Hye-seung's Morning Journal," Kim said she would need to hear what was discussed at the party's general meeting that day, but offered her personal view. "I don't think the public will pay much attention to the sight of us protesting outside the Assembly," she said.
"If we need to take action that the public will actually notice, I think we ultimately have no choice but to play the ultimate card — resigning our seats," she said.
She added that she had felt a deep sense of helplessness over the past two years. "There were many times when casting a dissenting vote on legislation that passed felt completely meaningless," she said.
Kim doubled down, saying the party needed to show it could still act in an Assembly where neither apologies nor dialogue were forthcoming. "In that sense, I think a mass resignation of all lawmakers is something we should consider doing at least once," she said.
"That would automatically dissolve the Assembly," she said. "Whether the Assembly accepts it or not, I want to send the message that we must show the public our firm resolve that we simply cannot work under these conditions."
