"We are seeking outstanding leaders to open the region's future." The South Jeolla-Gwangju Integrated Special City will select two political deputy mayors through a public nomination process, accepting candidate recommendations from July 10 to July 15 in partnership with the Ministry of Personnel Management.
It marks the first time a local government has applied the public recommendation system, under which citizens directly nominate candidates for public office.
The two positions cover distinct portfolios. One deputy mayor will oversee industry, employment, the economy, labor and advanced strategic industries, while the other will handle civic sovereignty, youth population policy, health and welfare, and gender equality.
Anyone may submit a nomination. Those with limited access to online services can apply in person at a community center within the special city's jurisdiction.
The city plans to complete the full selection process — including eligibility reviews and follow-up screening of nominees — by next month.
"There is a growing need to identify talent through public participation across central government agencies, local governments and public institutions, and we hope the public recommendation system will be used more broadly," said Lee Eun-yeong, director of talent information planning at the Ministry of Personnel Management. "We also hope to see greater collaboration and participation in the candidate selection process across a wider range of positions."
