230.6 tons of CO2 reduced; energy-saving practices to expand

The Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs (TIPA) joined an energy-saving campaign for Energy Day, switching off the lights at its Sejong headquarters.

TIPA announced Monday it had participated in the "Turn Off the Lights, Turn On the Stars" event on Saturday, cutting all office and exterior lighting at its Sejong headquarters simultaneously for 10 minutes starting at 9 p.m.

Now in its 23rd year, Energy Day traces its origins to Aug. 22, 2003, when electricity consumption hit a then-record high, prompting a nationwide push to raise awareness about the need to conserve energy. Led by the Energy Citizen Solidarity, the event has since been held annually across the country, featuring lights-out campaigns and other activities.

According to the organizers, last year's event reduced electricity consumption by 553,000 kWh nationwide and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 230.6 tons. The campaign aims to spread lifestyle-based conservation habits — reducing power use in offices and homes — alongside large-scale infrastructure investment.

"We will consistently join the lights-out event and practice energy conservation to contribute to carbon neutrality and ESG management," TIPA President Kim Young-shin said. "I hope our employees will make energy saving a part of their daily lives, not only at work but also at home."
