Remarks made at monetary policy press conference
Bank of Korea Governor Shin Hyun-song said Thursday that the won-dollar exchange rate "still appears high compared with previous years."
Speaking at a monetary policy press conference, Shin said the exchange rate had stabilized to some degree but added that "preemptive monetary policy action helps anchor the foreign exchange market and contributes to exchange rate stability."
"In that sense, I believe the preemptive response was appropriate," he said. "Going forward, further preemptive monetary policy action leaves room for the won to strengthen further. That would offset a significant portion of import price inflation and contribute to price stability as well."
