Democratic Party vows swift legislation, major investment push ahead of regular parliamentary session

The Democratic Party of Korea resolved Friday, ahead of the September regular session of the National Assembly, that "the party, government and presidential office must unite as one to answer the people's expectations with more capable and bolder politics."

Democratic Party lawmakers adopted the resolution as they wrapped up a parliamentary workshop held at the Inspire Hotel in Incheon, which had begun Thursday.

In the resolution, the lawmakers said they would "swiftly process livelihood legislation and the budget, and push forward judicial reform and electoral system reform without a hitch to achieve a 'great reform for the people's livelihoods.'" They also pledged to "lead a 'great transformation for growth' in which regions take the initiative and South Korea grows and develops together, by powerfully backing the three mega-projects."

On government investment, the resolution said the party would "realize a 'great investment for the future' that lays the foundation for South Korea to become a global leader, centered on youth, semiconductors and strategic growth industries." It added that "as a united team of party, government and presidential office, we will devote all our efforts to legislating key state affairs and steadfastly complete the 'great leap forward for South Korea' we have promised the people."

Party leader Kim Min-seok said the resolution adoption was "a time to steel our resolve and determination — to put everything we have into breaking through domestic and external challenges with 'livelihoods, livelihoods, livelihoods' as our top priority, and to stand at the turning point toward a golden era."

Kim also noted that lawmakers from the party's police reform task force had left for Jeju Island before dawn to visit the scene of a case in which a missing-persons report was allegedly closed under false pretenses. "Let us close this workshop with a pledge that we will all give everything we have — sincerely and with full force — in our work as lawmakers," he said.
