Heavy rain drenching South Jeolla Province and Gwangju expected to ease Monday afternoon

Up to around 156 millimeters of rain fell overnight across South Jeolla Province and Gwangju, extending a stretch of heavy rainfall that has now lasted five consecutive days.

According to the Gwangju Regional Office of the Korea Meteorological Administration, rainfall recorded between 9 p.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday included 156 millimeters on Nagwoldo island in Yeonggwang-gun, 46.8 millimeters on Heuksando island in Sinan, 31.3 millimeters in Suncheon and 18 millimeters in Beolgyo, Boseong.

Peak hourly rainfall during the same period reached 103.5 millimeters on Nagwoldo island in Yeonggwang-gun, 38.5 millimeters on Imjado island in Sinan, 23.8 millimeters in Suncheon and 16.5 millimeters in Beolgyo, Boseong.

Five-day cumulative totals have reached 389.5 millimeters on Nagwoldo island in Yeonggwang-gun, 264.6 millimeters in Boseong, 256.9 millimeters in Suncheon, 248.5 millimeters in Gwangyang, 231 millimeters in Boknae, Boseong, and 200.5 millimeters in Gurye. The rain is expected to taper off gradually from Monday afternoon.
