South Gyeongsang Provincial Assembly to open 436th regular session Tuesday for 17-day sitting

The South Gyeongsang Provincial Assembly announced Monday that it will open its 436th regular session Tuesday. The 17-day sitting will cover interpellations on provincial administration, approval of the fiscal year 2025 final accounts, review of a supplementary budget bill, and approval of an administrative audit plan.

The session opens with the first plenary meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, during which members will take up two agenda items — including the formal opening ceremony and setting the session calendar — followed by the governor's proposal presentation on South Gyeongsang Province's third supplementary budget bill for 2026.

The opening plenary will also feature urgent interpellations by Assembly members Kim Seong-gap (Geoje 3) and Kang Seong-jung (Tongyeong 1), who plan to question the provincial government's response to damage caused by heavy rains that struck the Geoje and Tongyeong areas in August.

Three lawmakers will then take the floor for broader questions on provincial administration. Assembly member Park Ju-eon (Geochang 1) will address the relocation of the human resources development institute and support policies for young people who have stopped seeking work. Kang will question the province's comprehensive island development plan and the Hansandaecheop Bridge construction project. Assembly member Shin Jong-cheol (Sancheong) will raise issues surrounding the establishment of a dedicated Korean studies research institution in South Gyeongsang Province and the deployment of public health doctors.

The interpellations will continue Wednesday and Thursday. At the second plenary on Wednesday, Assembly members Park Dong-cheol (Changwon 14), Kim Jin-gi (Gimhae 3), Yu Gye-hyeon (Jinju 4) and Jeong Gyu-heon (Changwon 9) will address the push to consolidate military academies, an AI-integrated care model for South Gyeongsang Province, strengthening the competitiveness of regional universities, and the Ungdong District 1 development project.

At the third plenary on Thursday, Assembly members Kim Seong-gap (Geoje 3), Jeong Ssang-hak (Changwon 10), Ha Seon-yeong (Gimhae 5) and Kim I-geun (Changwon 8) are set to question the current state of corporate support for the shipbuilding industry, the proposed administrative merger of South Gyeongsang Province and Busan, the Changwon-Gimhae expressway, and the Geoje-Masan section of National Route 5.

The assembly said it would closely examine the provincial administration's responses on the progress of key projects and pending issues, and would call for improvements and remedial measures where necessary.

The regular session will conclude with the fourth plenary meeting at 2 p.m. on Sept. 17.
