"Yeonggwang, with its abundant energy resources including the Hanbit nuclear power plant, is the ideal location for semiconductor materials, components and equipment industries," said Jang Se-il, county chief of Yeonggwang-gun in South Jeolla Province.
Jang made the remarks Wednesday when he met South Jeolla-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City Mayor Min Hyeong-bae at the Gwangju government complex to propose an integrated semiconductor vision.
Jang outlined a plan linking three distinct industrial zones: a semiconductor fabrication factory on the site of the Gwangju military airport, a new materials industry in the eastern region, and a materials, components and equipment sector in the western region.
As a concrete model for the western region's materials, components and equipment industry — which would include Yeonggwang — Jang proposed an industrial complex combining Yeonggwang's energy production base with its industrial sites.
Yeonggwang has nuclear power, offshore wind and solar energy infrastructure, and is considered well-positioned to supply renewable energy from those sources to semiconductor and materials, components and equipment industrial complexes.
"The semiconductor competitiveness of the special metropolitan city cannot be built on a single fabrication factory alone," Jang said. "The production base at the military airport, the new materials of the eastern region, the materials, components and equipment of the western region, and the energy to support them all must be connected as one." He added that he would work to define a specific role for Yeonggwang within Mayor Min's western-region industrial vision and contribute to strengthening the overall semiconductor competitiveness of the special metropolitan city.
